Temporary photograph of a Scottish Thistle till we obtain a picture of Tillicoultry Nestled at the foot of the Ochil Hills, Tillicoultry takes its name from its location. The name comes from the Gaelic meaning "at the foot of the hills". It is one of the Hillfoot Villages in Clackmannanshire, often called the Wee County, and has a population of about 5000. The surrounding hills provide a most scenic backdrop for the town. It lies along the A91, so you won’t have a problem driving to this picturesque town from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth. It is only about 25 miles away from either of these cities.

It was once the site of many woollen and textile mills, but these have long since closed. It was here the famous Patons mills produced the many different brands of wool well known to knitters all over the world. Today the only textile mill here is Daiglen, which still manufactures tartan.

There is archaeological evidence that Tillicoultry was home to Picts and Romans in ancient times. Urns containing old bones have been found here as well as a Roman sword and the area used to have a stone circle, as was common in Pictish times. There are many scenic walks where you can see the beauty of the area and its wildlife where there are plenty of waterfalls to entrance you. Climb the Glen to the point where you have a commanding view of the Forth Bridges and the Trossachs on a clear day.

Enjoy a day of golf at the Tillicoultry Golf Club. This is a challenging nine-hole course and is well worth the visit and chance to test your skills. Visit the Dry Ski Slope at Firpark Ski Centre where you will surely have a delightful experience. The many pubs in the town will give you a chance to meet many of the local people and hear the stories and legends of Tillicoultry along with a drink and a fine meal.

Visit the Clock Mill, the only mill remaining from the heyday of Tillicoultry. It has been completely restored and is the home of the Clock Mill Business Centre. Shop at the Sterling Mills Factory Outlets where you are sure to find a great bargain and impressive souvenirs to take back home with you.

When you visit Tillicoultry, there is no lack of accommodations where you will be quite comfortable. Stay in a hotel in the town or at a bed and breakfast located in the countryside. The restaurants serve traditional Scottish food as well as international cuisine, so you will not go hungry during your vacation. This is the perfect base to choose to explore the surrounding towns and villages, none of which will disappoint you.
