Temporary photograph of a Scottish Thistle till we obtain a picture of Aberlour Another name for the town of Aberlour is Charlestown of Aberlour. It is located in Moray, Scotland and is about 12 miles from the town of Elgin. The town is home to about 1000 friendly people who will certainly make you feel welcome whenever you choose to visit. The full name of the town comes from its founder, Charles Grant of Wester Elchies who laid out the plan for Aberlour in 1812. The High Street is a mile long and has a square located to the west. This town replaced the earlier community of Skirdustan and all that remains of it today are the ruins of St. Drostan's Kirk.

One of the noteworthy buildings in Aberlour is the orphanage founded in 1875 by a minister by the name of Charles Jupp. He is buried in St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, which was the church that the children of the orphanage attended. There were separate sections of the building for boys and girls and the common school was located between them.

Another building of note is the Fleming Institute. This was designed by William Reid and donated to the town by James Fleming, a local banker. There is an old bridge here that was once used by packhorses for crossing the Burn of Aberlour and the River Spey. Aberlour House dates back to 1832 and was the home of a local farmer's son, named Alexander Grant. This man made his fortune in the West Indies and returned home to purchase the ancestral home of the Gordon's of Aberlour.

Aberlour is a very popular tourist destination. Mountain climbing on Ben Rinnes will take you to the dizzying height of 2755 feet from which you have a commanding view of the entire countryside. If this is not something that you enjoy, there are tamer pursuits for you such as the excellent fishing that the town offers. Of course, you have to take a tour of the Walkers factory and taste the world famous shortbread. The Glenallachie Distillery is also close by and has guided tours of the facility as well as a tasting feature. You can purchase souvenirs of your visit in the gift shop and a little taste to bring back home with you.

Stroll through the streets of Aberlour and drop into the stores along High Street. When you need a refreshing drink, the folks at the pub will provide you with music, song and dance so you know that you are among friends.
