Traditionally known as the Granary of the North because of the fertile land it beholds, the Laich of Moray lies to the west and south of the town of Lossiemouth. Easily reached by the coast road, there are splendid walks along the coast and through the forests. Interesting rock formations and wildlife can be seen, and numerous beaches include small sheltered sandy coves between Hopeman and Covesea. A great expanse of sands stretch from Burghead to Findhorn. The cliffs afford extensive views over the Moray Firth to the hills of Sutherland, where the sun sets almost in the north in midsummer.
The Moray Firth is one of only two places in Britain where there are resident bottle nosed dolphins. On calm sunny days an observant walker can be almost sure of spotting them leaping from the water in a playful manner. Sometimes they come very close to the shore, taking advantage of the fertile fishing waters with salmon waiting for the rise before entering the mouths of the River Spey, Lossie and Findhorn. The traditional holiday resort of Lossiemouth has extensive sandy beaches on either side of the town. A range of facilities are offered including sea angling and two 18-hole golf courses, one of which, a regular venue for championships. The town's development has been ascribed to the need of Elgin for a new port after its original port of Spynie had been cut off from the sea by sand and shingle deposited over a time by the River Lossie. The resulting Loch of Spynie was useless to shipping, though now a great variety of wildlife find sanctuary there, including large migratory birds like swans and geese. A new impetus was given by the rising trade resulting from the herring fishing in the 19th century. The present harbour was built to accommodate the growing fleet, and a new town.
