A historic town in the Grampian Highlands, Old Meldrum is home to about 2000 people. It is in the ideal location for exploring Aberdeenshire, the magnificent countryside of the Grampian and Cairngorm ranges. When you are in Old Meldrum, you are also in close proximity to Royal Deeside and Speyside. The narrow streets of the town will draw you back to an earlier time when it was a medieval market town. Market Square is centred around the Old Town Hall, which dates back to the late 1800’s. This area is now a conservation area and preserved as a historic site. Glengarioch is a working distillery that you can tour and see how the fine whisky is made. You can also see how they use the waste heat from the distilleries to provide heat for the greenhouses, where they grow tomatoes and other plants. Oldmeldrum is the location of one of the finest guesthouses in the country as well as many self-catering cottages, inns and bed and breakfast establishments. There are two 18-hole golf courses here, although one of them is private. Enjoy the Camra ale at one of the award winning pubs in the town and each June, Oldmeldrum is the venue for the first of the sessions of Highland Games with the Oldmeldrum Sports.
Climb Barra Hill, which is about 634 feet hill. It was here that Robert the Bruce defeated the Comyns in 1308. This hill was once an Iron Age hill fort, which shows that Oldmeldrum was the site of settlement in prehistoric times. There are many exceptional castles and garden quite close to this town, which are now under the ownership of the national Trust of Scotland. Explore the nearby towns and museums and learn about Highland life from the past to the present. There are several hotels in the town as well as self-catering cottages for you to rent so you won’t have any problems finding accommodations. The meals served at the restaurants will surely please even the most discerning pallet.
