The single crescent of white houses tucked into a cliff base on some of the most picturesque coastline of the Moray Firth, is known as Pennan, a village brought to fame by the film Local Hero. Movie enthusiasts come from all over the world to make a phone call in The public phone box of Britain. It was initially put there as a prop for the film but when it was taken away again, such a fuss was made, that they put it back. It is now a protected monument. Nearby, the roofless kirk of St John, was founded by the locals in 1004 as thanksgiving for their defeat of Viking raiders. The kirk affords spectacular views of the Moray Firth and eastwards towards the nearby village of Gardenstown. Sea trips are the best way to explore this part or the coast.
