This village in Easter Ross is only 3 miles from Beauly. The MacKenzies of Ord developed this town in the 19^th century as a centre for whisky distilling with the coming of the road and railway to the area. The area is still well known for its cultivation of barley for malting. The economy of the town depends on tourism, distilling, construction and metal fabrication.

Muir of Ord is the birthplace of two famous Scotsmen. The geologist and geographer, Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, was born on the Tarradale Estate in 1792 and Willie Logan, the founder of Loganair was born in Muir of Ord in 1913. The town is located at the neck of the Black Isle on an isthmus between the Moray, Beauly and Cromarty Firths.

Spend a day on the course at the Muir of Ord Golf Club. This heath land course has tight fairways and is easy to walk. Take a tour of the Glen Ord Distillery and see how your favourite malt whisky is made. This distillery is the only one that survived of the nine that were once present in the area.

There are plenty of accommodations available if you would like to stay in Muir of Ord. It also makes a very pleasant day trip from Inverness, if you would prefer to stay in a larger centre.
