Nairn has been a favoured holiday destination since the Victorian era. Charlie Chaplin had an affinity with the town. Along with the other towns and villages on the Moray Firth, Nairn benefits from a mild climate caused by the Gulf Stream, a warm current pushed up the Atlantic Ocean, touching the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland before descending the North Sea onto the Moray Firth. In the 19th century the Industrial Revolution allowed thousands of people to travel to Nairn from great distances, the local seawater was reputed to have medicinal properties. Dr Grigor encouraged people to come to Nairn and its prosperity grew, a statue in the town commemorates him. The layout of the town is both practical and pleasing to the eye, with an atmosphere enhanced by the welcome you are sure to receive from the friendly inhabitants of the town. Nairn has two splendid golf courses, a Leisure Park along the promenade and swimming pool.
You can walk along two beaches and take in the majestic scenery of the Moray Firth and the mountains, Sutors of Cromarty and Ben Wyvis with the hills of Sutherland on the horizon. There are also walks along the banks of the River Nairn, nature trails in Cawdor Castle woods and the outstanding areas of natural beauty, Culbin Forest and Culbin Sands on the coast, which is a haven for a variety of wildlife including many species of birds. On the seafront the town has an attractive harbour, which like many of the towns on the coast here, was once used as a fishing port but it is now mainly used for pleasure craft, many of which take part in the local sailing competitions.
