Rousay is a small, hilly island located only about two miles off the Orkney mainland. With a population of less than 300 people, archaeological evidence shows that this island was inhabited during every stage in the history of mankind. Its nickname is "Egypt of the North" because of the many cairns that have been found here. There are 3 Iron Age towers within 500 feet of the coastline and the remains of Viking boats and burial places. Visitors can also see the ruins of a medieval church and a stately home at Trumland. In order to reach this island you have to take the ferry from Tingwall, on the western side of the mainland of Orkney, to Trumland the largest village on Rousay. The island is almost square, measuring 5 miles by 5 miles and there are 13 miles of road around the island. The roads are very narrow in places, so if you take your own car with you have to travel slowly.
Trunland House was built in 1873 and instead of the £3000 cost originally quoted the price of construction was actually over £10,000. This made life difficult for the crofters because the laird had to increase his earnings to pay for the house. Although this building has fallen into disrepair, the new owners are working at restoring it. There is a viewing platform nearby where you can also see one of the many cairns, the Taversoe Tuick Cairn. The walks to the various cairns and brochs is over hilly ground, so visitors are advised to wear good walking shoes. Rousay offers the ultimate escape if you want peace and tranquility. The whole island is a wealth of history and is a favourite haunt if history buffs. The scenery is spectacular and will provide you with a whole new outlook on life.
