The "arms and legs" shape of Stronsay is due to the many large bays you will find on this Orkney Island that measures only six miles by seven miles. Most of the land is low-lying and the highest hills are only about 250 feet high. Because of the fertile land, farming is very important here. Most of the farms raise cattle and the land is great for grazing. Even though there are large fields of barley, this is mainly as feed for the cattle. There is not a lot of employment on Stronsay, with most of the 380 residents working at several jobs. There is no police force on the island and the people are very friendly. There is, however, a resident doctor and nurse and a volunteer Fire Department and Coastguard. Getting to and from Stronsay is not difficult with the daily ferry service and flights from Kirkwall.
