Aberfeldy Travel Guide

General Wade's Bridge, Aberfeldy, Perthshire - Picture taken by Craig Young The picturesque town of Aberfeldy is located on the south side of the River Tay. Even though the town has had a range of industries through the years, such as manufacturing cotton and machining, the one for which it is best known is the distilling of whisky. Aberfeldy followed the same process as other towns in Scotland with illegal distilling until it became legal in the early 19th century. At one time there were three distilleries in the town, but only one remains. The Aberfeldy Distillery has been in business since 1896 and still uses the same supply of water from the hills. Now known as Dewars World of Whisky it has a visitor centre and is open for tours if you want to see how your favourite dram is made and perhaps get a free taste in the bargain.

Glen Lyon is one of the most beautiful, and longest, glens of Scotland. The Tay Bridge allows traffic to cross but only in one direction at a time. This bridge dates back to the Jacobite uprising of 1715, when a network of roads was built by General Wade and is part of the Rob Roy Way, linking the towns of Pitlochry and Drymen. Following this route will take you to many of the places associated with Rob Roy MacGregor, the notorious Scottish outlaw.

The Black Watch Monument stands overlooking both the bridge and the river and provides a breathtaking view of Glen Lyon and the Ben Lawers hills. In the centre of town, you will find a delightful shopping district where you can purchase many local arts and crafts. Spend some time on the putting green or relaxing in Victoria Park. Just outside the town you can visit Castle Menzies and the gardens at Bolfracks and Cluny House are not to be missed. The Bolfracks Garden has many plants blooming along a gently flowing stream and the garden at Cluny House is rated one of the best woodland gardens in Scotland.

There are hotels, restaurants and pubs waiting to treat you like the friend you will be once you leave.
