Callander Travel Guide

Bracklin Falls in Callander Callander is located in central Scotland, just on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. It is only an hour’s drive from the major cities of Stirling, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth. This has been an important place in the History of Scotland right back to prehistoric times. A Neolithic site at the Claish farm dates back to 4000 B.C. and the largest chambered cairn in Scotland is located at Auchenlaich Farm. Every period in history has had an effect on Callander in some way – the Romans, the Vikings, the Jacobites. In 1763, a Soldier’s Settlement was established at the end of the Seven Year’s War and families from the Highland Glen moved to the area. Businesses developed and tourism began here as early as the mid-1800’s.

Visitors are often amazed at the array of attractions and activities they find here. With five lochs within driving distance, opportunities for swimming and various other water sports abound. Take a trip back to your childhood at the Children’s Toy Museum. Even if you are not a walker at heart, you will enjoy taking the footpath from the preacher’s mound at Tom na Chessaig, past the ancient graveyard to the panoramic views all along the River Teith. Follow the trail to the ruins of a Roman marching camp to the Pass of Leny before you return to Callander.

If you want to explore Callander and the surrounding countryside, take a coach tour for a day. Accommodations are not hard to find in this bustling little city depending on your budget. Stay at the Leny Estate with its elegant bed and breakfast or the Westerton Bed and Breakfast, just a short stroll from the centre of town. In addition, there are cottages to rent and several camping grounds where you can park your RV or pitch a tent.

If you want to go shopping while on your vacation, you do need to browse the selection of designer clothes at Desirable Garments of Distinction and purchase a hat designed just for you at Clare Workman Designer Milliner. There are many quaint craft stores where you are certain to find that unique gift for someone at home.
